The Great Malayalam literary translators   

 

 

 

The great Malayalam literary translators are many namely V. Balakrishnan, Dr. R. Leela Devi, Nileena Abraham, M. K. Kumaran, N. K. Damodaran, Raveendranathan. R, D. Vinayachandran, Kesari Balakrishna Pillai etc.  

 

V. Balakrishnan was one of the great Malayalam literary translators. (1932-2004) was Malayalam writer and translator. He married Dr. R. Leela Devi. They together translated many Sanskrit books namely the Vedas, Puranas, Aranyakas, Upanishads, Dharsanas, Mahabharata, Valmiki Ramayana Devi and Bhagavatam to Malayalam.  

 

Dr. R. Leela Devi was a writer, teacher and a translator. She wrote in different languages namely Malayalam, Sanskrit and in English. The only drama in Sanskrit namely “Naganadam” was translated by her. The original Sanskrit play was by Harshavardhana. Her other translation includes Marthandavarma, Narayaneeyam, and Vidur Gita (Mahabharata). 

 

Nileena Abraham is a translator from Kerala state. She was born in Bengal and done her schooling and college education there.  At Maharaja's College Ernakulam, she worked as a lecturer of Bengali. She translated eight Bengali works into Malayalam. From Malayalam to Bengali, she translated ten works.  Some of her translated works in Malayalam are Arogyaniketanm, Ezhu Chuvadu, Midhunalagnam, Avan Varunnu etc.  

 

M. K. Kumaran 91915-1994) was a famous writer, journalist as well as politician of Kerala state.  On progressive literature and politics, he has written several articles. He translated many works from Russia. 

 

N. K. Damodaran was a famous writer and translator of Kerala state. He published more than twenty books and won many awards. His first translation was Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novels into Malayalam.  

 

Raveendranathan. R. is another writer and translator of Kerala state. He had translated the best seller “Rogue state” by William Blum from English to Malayalam. Raveendranathan’s another translation was “Jonathan Livingston seagull” by Richard Bach to Malayalam language. He also translated the best seller “Vedics Mathematics made easy” by Dhaval Bathia. He is the author of famous Malayalam book namely “108 Thirupathikal”.  

 

Sundara Ramaswamy, a Tamil writer translated Malayalam writer, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pilla’s Thottiyude Magan. SuRaa was the pen name of this Tamil writer. He had done 60 short stories, several translations, novels and dozens of essays. 

 

D. Vinayachandran is another writer, poet as well as translator. His famous works include, samastha keralam P O, narakam, peru ariyatha marangal, vamsa gadha, samayamanasam 
etc. 

 

Kesari Balakrishna Pillai was a literary critic, social thinker as well as a writer. He read and wrote different subjects. One of his book was “Navalokam” (New World). He published a newspaper namely “Kesari”. Through this he was known later. To show examples of world Literature to the Malayali writers, Kesari translated many literary works directly from French. 

E. V. Ramakrishnan is a noted writer and translator. He translates many Malayalam works to English. Currently he is working as the Professor of English, Gujarat.  

 

M.N. Sathyardhi is also a famous writer from Kerala state. He was born in Punjab. His father was a Malayali. He was proficient in Hindi , Punjabi,Urdu, Bengali   and Persianlanguages along with Malayalam and English. Some of his works include Vilaykku vaangam, Prabhukkalum Bhrutyarum, Netajiyude Balyam etc.
