Tourist destinations of Kerala
There are many tourist destinations in Kerala for the International tourists or the tourists of the neighboring
states. Some of the destinations include Kumarakom, Athirappilly, Bekal, Munnar, Kovalam, Alappuzha
Kumarakom is in Kottayam district of Kerala state. It is 16 km away from Kottayam. The bird sanctuary in this
cluster of islands is famous. This place is ornithologist's paradise. This sanctuary is spread in 14 acres. Birds
like Teals, Waterfowls, Cuckoo, Egrets, Darters, Herons, Siberian stork etc attracts visitors. The Kerala State
Tourism Development Corporation encourage the visitors with many attractions with boating, fishing facilities,
memorable trip through traditional Kettuvalloms (rice barges) etc.
Kovalam is an internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It has been a favorite haunt of
tourists, especially Europeans, since the 1930s. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has created a beautiful
bay of calm waters ideal for sea bathing.
Ayurvedic health resorts, shopping facilities, Yoga and Ayurvedic massage centers etc are other
Athirappilly waterfall is located in Chalakudy river. The waterfall is about 80 feet high. Athirappilly is situated
78 kms from Kochi.
Bekal is in Kasaragod. It is one of the largest fort in Kerala. It is in the Northern district of Kerala. Kasaragod
is a land of hills, rivers, forts etc. Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC).has been developed many
facilities for the tourists namely enough parking space for different types of vehicles, to explore the beauty of
the coastline, a beautiful walkway had been laid, eru madam [tree house] or multi shed for resting the tourists,

Munnar Is another attractive location for the tourists. Some attractions of this place include tea plantations,
colonial bungalows, cool weather etc. Munnar is 1600m above the sea level. This place is good for mountain biking,
trekking etc. Heard of Eravikulam National Park? This park is 15km from Munnar. This National park is famous for
the Nilgiri Tahr, endangered inhabitant.
Mattupetty is located in Munnar. This place is situated at a height of 1700m above the sea level. There is a
storage masonry dam and beautiful lake here which attracts hundreds of tourists to this place every year. There is
a dairy farm for different high yielding breeds of cows, run by the Indo-Swiss Livestock Project. Tea plantations,
rolling grasslands, ideal place for trekking, home for different birds etc are some attractions here.
you know which place is known as “the Venice of the East”? It is Alappuzha. This place is famous for back water
holidays, coir industry, boat races, marine products etc. A memorable experience in Alappuzha is a stay in
houseboat. To carry tons of rice and spices, the original kettuvallams or rice barges were used. Today
houseboats include all facilities like furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even
a balcony for enjoying the beauty of the journey.
